While the term is better associated with an experimental style of art, it originally referred to the reconnaissance unit in the French army.

I used to spend a good chunk of my life reading random Wikipedia articles to fill my head with useless knowledge, but at least it helped with naming my armour.

Avante-Garde, you helped me with my first foray into the Labyrinth. Your spirit shall live on in my new armour.

I placed a white flower over its chest and took a step backwards.

“I introduce you to my new partner.”

While the first armour was essentially a giant metal can, the second armour looked much more chiselled down and agile, just like the ones knights wear.

“This is my second living armour: Paladin Sonata.”

Its polished, rich, creamy tone looked graceful, reflecting light in every which way possible.

The elegant white of the armour didn’t fit the human trash that is Louie Permarten, but it was the most appropriate for Horn E. Mann, the brave guardian of the knight order.

By the way, I didn’t pick this colour because it looked cool.

It’s purely because of its functionality.

…or something.

Anyway, I’m not sure how far I can take this armour down, but I intend to use it for a while since it cost me a pretty penny.

Avante-garde was originally being used by the Magic Tower as a research project. Fortunately, it had already been tested in the Infinite Labyrinth prior to my ownership.

It was only meant to be a stop-gap solution because I couldn’t find anything else in such a short time. Paladin Sonata was always meant to be my main armour.

It’s time for the second foray down to the Infinite Labyrinth.

There’s still much to plan, but I just hope I don't end up having to decorate this entire room with destroyed armour.

I began to wonder as I pondered over the ruined armour.

This armour was completely destroyed on the 5th floor. Will I be able to use a living armour down on the 100th floor?

“I’ll need something better.”

While I did just buy a brand new armour, I’ll need an armour even stronger and safer.

“I put my trust in you until then, Paladin Sonata.”

Under the armour, a blue glow lit up from inside the helmet.

After receiving the first armour, I requested a second living armour from Barvas, the Master of the Magic Tower. I bought a knight’s armour and sent it to the Magic Tower for them to turn into a living armour I can control.

The main function of Paladin Sonata is to keep idiots away from my knights.

“The only question now is how well it’ll move when it’s down on the 5th floor of the Labyrinth.”

I looked to my side.

“Instructor Astarote, do you have anything to tell me about Paladin Sonata?”

“The overall capabilities of the armour has greatly improved compared to the temporary—”

“Avante-garde wasn’t some stop-gap, temporary measure! He kept Laura safe with his life!”

I’m not mad at Astarote, I just couldn’t stand to hear the slander against my loyal soldier.

“I’m sorry, Scion. I understand how much it means to you.”

“Indeed.”

Every adventurer has equipment special to them, and the living armour is mine.

“Ahem. How well will the armour hold up in terms of mana, Astarote?”

“We made sure to improve its magic performance. Here.”

She pointed at the blue magic stone set in the middle of Paladin Sonata’s chest.

“This is the magic stone we found after killing the raging Obelisk.”

“Right.”

That’s the gacha lapis we found.

“We tried imbuing it with mana, but none of the things you described happened—no one descended down from the heavens, or was summoned with an angelic hymn. It’s just a magic stone. That’s all.”

Even though you can’t play gacha with it, this stone carries a ton of mana. It’ll help the living armour receive my signal more easily.

Although I won’t be wearing it, I'm sad we need to ruin the perfect finish of the armour by marking it on the inside.

I cleared my throat.

“Goddess, please bless this armour so it may protect my knights in the field of battle!”

“Scion.”

Laura nodded with a warm smile on her face.

“I’m certain the goddess heard your prayer.”
